How To Get Cheap Car Insurance For Young Drivers?

brokemanWell, the truth is, drivers under age 25 are considered a high risk group. So it may not be possible to get bargain basement priced car insurance under 25. However, there are some steps you can take to make the most of discounts so your policy is as affordable as possible.

Learner’s Permits and Car Insurance

If you are concerned about your son or daughter who is still driving with a learner’s permit, he or she may be covered by your family policy with no additional cost. In my case, my insurer assured me that this was fine until my own teen got a real license. I am not sure if the laws are different in different states, or even from insurer to insurer though. Be sure and check with your company.  I have seen different answers to this question on various insurance websites, so your best bet would be to get the right answer from your own company!

Driver’s Education Classes – In my day, these were taught in public schools. I had to find a private school for my own kids, and it cost about $400.  My first insurer did not offer a discount for class completion, but my second insurer did! And the discount made up for the cost of this class after about 8 months, plus it should have turn a young driver into a safer driver! The private class included classroom time, alcohol and drug awareness, and also several drives with a qualified teacher.

Good Student Discounts – Many insurers offer a discount for students who have, at least, a B average. The statistics they keep on this sort of thing convice them that better students are also likely to be responsible drivers.  If you can bring a strong report card to your insurance agent, it may help!

Multiple Policy Discounts – Many young drivers are included with their parent’s automobile insurance policy. This means the whole family may be able to find discounts for multiple vehicles, auto and home policy discounts, or family policy price breaks. Some insurers are willing to absorb the risk of a teen or young adult driver because they can get all of the family’s business that way.

Good Driving Record – Of course, if you want to take advantage of discounts, it really helps if your teen driver (or young adult) is a safe driver. An accident or ticket will not be pretty, and your rates are likely to go up at the next renewal.  This is probably obvious to most of us, but it is something to remind your child about.

Shop Around – As I wrote above, not all insurers offer the same discounts or rates. Your best bet is to compare auto insurance quotes to get the best deal from a top insurer.  Online car insurance quote forms make it fairly simple and easy to get an idea about the cost of car insurance for every driver in your family!

I had assumed my old company would offer my own teen driver a better rate out of loyalty, but I actually got a much better price from another company.
