Low Mileage Car Insurance Discounts

Can Sunday Drivers or Soccer Moms Get Low Mileage Car Insurance Discounts?

womancarI have seen a lot of ads for low mileage auto insurance discounts recently. Some make claims that insurers will charge you less if you drive less. This does make sense since people who do not drive very much seem like they should have a lower risk of having an auto accident. Since a lot of people keep a car, but do not use it very much, this way to save money looked worth looking into.

Yes, You Can!

I believe that average drivers are expected to put about 12,000 miles a year on their vehicles. A lot of auto isurance companies, including State Farm Mutual Insurance Cos., Travelers Cos. and Farmers Insurance Group say that drivers who log less than about 7,500 miles a year may be eligible for low mileage discounts that lower the price about 10%.  If you pay $1,8000 a year for your premiums, this is $180 a year of savings. State Farm’s program earns drivers even more of a discount, ranging from 12% to 18%, according to spokesman Dick Luedke.

Progressive insurance handles this a little differently. They actually ask their customers to install a sort of tracker in the car. It logs mileage, but also the way the car is driven. A customer service rep said that the speed, and the way the car is stopped and started will be noted. If the driver cooperates and qualifies, they can earn substantial discounts.

Does Your Insurer Offer Low Mileage Discounts?

So, apparently, you may qualify for auto insurance discounts if you drive infrequently, or if you drive in a way that lowers your risks. If you think you should be entitled to a break like this, be sure and ask your current insurer about it. If your current company does not offer this, it may be time to compare auto insurance quotes to find a company that charges less for a driver like you!
