Dental and Vision with Medicare

Lots of people want to know if Medicare covers dental work or vision care. After all, these medical services can be very expensive too, and no less in aging people. But while some Medicare Advantage plans may have some dental coverage, most of these services are not covered by Medicare. Retirees may also have these benefits covered through their job’s retirement plan.

Medicare Dental

Here is what Medicare.gov has to say about Dental care under Medicare.

Medicare does not cover routine dental care or most dental procedures such as cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions or dentures. In rare cases, Medicare Part B will pay for certain dental services. In addition, Medicare Part A will pay for certain dental services that you get when you are in the hospital. Call your local Medicare Carrier for more information.

So most routine dental care will not be covered. Under certain situations, usually if dental work is needed because of an accident or illness, some services may be covered. Go ahead and check first. Good resources are your Medicare office or a supplemental Medicare health insurance company you are a member of.

Vision (Optical) Services Under Medicare

This is similar to Medicare Dental Coverage in that routine treatment like vision exams, eyeglasses, etc. are not normally covered.  Surgery, or other treatment by an M.D. should be covered under Medicare Part B. If you are unsure, check with a Medicare office or your supplemental health insurance.

Medicare beneficiaries, or other people without dental plans, may enjoy some great savings with a national dental (vision) discount plan. While these plans are not insurance, they admit you into network discounts, which is similar to a benefit provided by many insurance plans.

However we know that good dental care can impact our health very much. Most of them provide routine dental care, like cleanings and checkups, for very reduced – if not free – rates. They also also provide discounted access to many services that may not be covered by dental insurance. These services include crowns, orthodontic braces, dentures, and even, cosmetic dentistry!

What About Dental Insurance?

Some of us have dental insurance, but we find that when we need any more then routine care, it does not pay very much, or it does not pay at all.

• Major service like crowns or reconstruction usually requires a hefty copay.
• There may also be a deductible that we must meet before our benefits start to kick in.
•  We may hit the yearly limit of our dental insurance which may only be a $1K or $2K.
•  And other services, like cosmetic dentistry, orthodontic braces, and dentures may not be covered at all.
•  Beyond that, a new dental insurance policy an have a long waiting period before major services are covered.

Low Cost Dental Discount Plan Lookup

If you do not have dental coverage, or if your dental plan isn’t helping you with services you want or need, consider a low cost dental discount plan.  They are usually very inexpensive, have extensive networks of local dentists in various specialties, and include very cheap (sometimes free) checkups and cleanings. Some of these plans even include discounts for other medical services like vision care and prescription drugs too. The fees are low, there are not usually any waiting periods at all, and a variety of services may be included.

It is important to note that dental discount plans are not insurance though. While they provide access to discounted services, they do not usually pay for any of the services.

Furthermore, you can visit the dental plan website, search for dentists in your own area or look for a dentist you already know, sign up, and starting using your benefits right away. You will have no waiting periods, and you will have no concerns about pre-existing conditions.

Dental Plans VS Dental Insurance

Now these plans are not dental insurance, but dental insurance does have some drawbacks. Plans have yearly maximums they will pay that are fairly low. They also usually contain deductibles that you must pay before the insurance kicks in, and will require co-payments. All services may not be covered. It is uncommon to find braces or cosmetic work addressed. Also, most dental insurance plans have waiting periods before you can expect coverage for larger dental services. You might be able to get your teeth cleaned right away, but have to wait a year for a crown!

So, if you do not have dental insurance, of if you find that the limitations of your dental insurance still leave you with a large dental bill, then look into an inexpensive dental plan.
