In the US, we are alarmed about the constant news that the number of Americans who do not have medical insurance approaches 50 million. We don’t hear this as often, but it is also very alarming that over 100 million Americans lack dental coverage. Good dental care contributes to overall health, can deteriorate into emergency situations, and of course, can be very expensive.
Some of us have dental insurance, but we find that when we need any more then routine care, it does not pay very much, or it does not pay at all. Major service like crowns or reconstruction usually requires a heft copay. We may hit the yearly limit of our dental insurance which may only be a $1K or $2K. And other services, like cosmetic dentistry, orthodontic braces, and dentures may not be covered at all. Beyond that, a new dental insurance policy an have a long waiting period before major services are covered.

If you do not have dental coverage, or if your dental plan isn’t helping you with services you want or need, consider a low cost dental discount plan. They are usually very inexpensive, have extensive networks of local dentists in various specialties, and include very cheap (sometimes free) checkups and cleanings.
