Declined for Health Insurance?

We hear a lot about the 47 million Americans who do not have health insurance. Well, I’m pretty sure that a large percentage of Americans who do not have health insurance these days did try to apply, but were declined for an individual health plan.

This is a big problem. See, health insurance companies can cherry pick on the individual market. Many times they will consider applicants with minor health problems, and either increase premiums or offer a policy that excludes coverage for some pre-existing conditions. Sometimes they do both!

Save Money By Comparing Insurance Rates

So what do you do when you apply and the insurance company either declines you for coverage, or they adjut the premiums way beyond your budget? The first thing you should do is to find out exactly why. Some people are very aware of the health issue that caused the decision, but many people do not understand the problem at all. Make sure that you call the health insurer or your health insurance agent to find out what the exact problem is.

Next, if your premium was raised beyond your budget, consider the offer they made. Could you live with a higher deductible, while still having coverage for major bills? That may be the solution you will be forced to choose. I did not say I could come up with a perfect solution, but only a solution in an imperfect health insurance system.

If you are declined for one type of policy, it is time to do a couple of things. First, a different insurer or type of insurance may be willing to accept you. Or, in the case of some conditions like high blood pressure, you may be able to pick up a policy if you can demonstrate you are following doctor’s orders and can control your issue. But if you cannot solve your coverage issue this way, it is time to ask a qualified insurance agent or your state health insurance department about the high risk health plan in your area.
