Obama’s Health Care Reform Plan Outline

We are beginning to get the long awaited details of Obama’s plan for health care reform. Yes, it is tough to consider this challenging topic when the economy is still struggling, but on the other hand, millions of unemployed people have been losing group health insurance, so maybe this is a really good time.

Required Health Insurance – The plan moves towards requiring every American to be covered. Very poor people would be exempted from paying. We must presume that the plan would include an option for a public health insurance plan that would accept people with health issues that may be declined by private health insurance companies on an indvidual basis. Either that, or the individual health insurance plans would not be allowed to deny those with pre-existing health conditions.

The plan is expected to cost a trillion and a half bucks over the last decade. And of course, the details on where that money will come from have not been worked out. However, planned efficiencies in current health care and in publish health programs that already exist may save billions which should help.

Also, congress is thinking about taxing current health benefits that companies provide for employees. As much as I hate the idea of having Americans pay more taxes, it does seem sort of fair since many employees do not benefit from a company group health insurance plan, and must pay for their own medical benefits.
