PPO Versus HMO — Health Insurance Plan Comparisons
In doing our educated, but probably unscientific research, we have found that when consumers compare the best types of health insurance plans, they want to compare a very specific thing, and that is PPO Versus HMO.
HMO HEALTH INSURANCE
An HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) means that coverage depends upon a network of health care providers that agree to the terms of the HMO in exchange for a steady stream of customers. These managed care networks usually provide top coverage levels, with minimum copays and coinsurance.
In some areas, the networks are very large, so insured people are satisfied with the network. However, understand that most of the time, medical services will only be covered withing the network. Now you may be able to get an exception to that rule. In the case of an emergency, the network coverage should be waived. For other, non-emergency services that are not included in a particular network, an insured person must get the service pre-approved in advanced. Make sure to get this pre-approved in writing.
PPO Health Plans
PPO (Preferred Provider Organizations) health plans are more flexible than HMO health plans. They also include a network, and offer the highest coverage for medical services from in-network medical providers. However, PPO plans also offer to cover medical services outside the neetwork, but at a lower rate. So for the lowest out of pocket medical costs, an insured person would still want to use the network. But if they desire some service, or a particular doctor or hospital, outside the network, they would still be covered. Emergency situations are also usually covered at the in-network rates.
PPO VS HMO — WHich is Best?
The choice between a PPO or HMO will depend upon many factors, including what plans are available in your local area. If you live where there is a large and active HMO network, you will probably be very satisfied with the convenience and simplicity of an HMO. If you like more flexibility, or do not have convenient access to network medical providers, you would probably be more satisifed with a PPO!
