The Best Health Plan For You!

If you are shopping for an individual or family health insurance plan, or if you have to choose a plan from the choices at your company, it can be a very confusing and complex process. To add to the problem of rising health costs, high health insurance premiums, and complex insurance systems, is the fact that many consumers really do not understand which policy they should choose!

You need to look at the premiums. If you are buying an individual health plan, you will pay the entire premium though you may be able to deduct some of it from your taxes. If you work for a company, you will probably have to contribute some portion of the premium, even if you do not have to pay the whole thing. Then you need to think about your expectations from a health plan. Do you expect it to cover every doctor’s appointment, prescriptions, and well care, or do you just want your health insurance to cover you in case of an emergency?

I always advise insurance shoppers to keep their budget in mind, because a health insurance policy that gets dropped when money is tight does not really help anybody. Beyond that, I would accept a higher deductible on the bottom then low limits on the top. In other words, I would rather have a $5,000 major medical deductible on a plan that will cover me for millions of dollars on the top hand than a $500 deductible on a limited benefit plan that maxes out at $30,000.

After all, if you really get sick, you are going to need your insurance to pay lots of money. If you are not that sick, you will probably still have income, and while the bills may be troubling, they will probably not ruin you.
