So What Do Health Insurance Companies Have Aganst Fat People?
Honestly, you’d think tha being overweight is the only health issue in America today! And yeah, we are a pretty fat nation I guess. But first it was the airlines, and now its the health insurance companies coming down on fast people, and even on chubby babies! Of course, a slim child was also on the news for being denied coveverage for being too thin? So where’s the line? Even Obama seems to think that overweight people should pay more for major medical.
It’s hard to find published health insurance weight guidelines for kids, but let’s look at some adult samples. They really don’t look that unreasonable. One example had a five foot and four inch tall woman getting charged extra if she weight over 171 pounds, and being declined at 228 pounds. It seems like this insurer was still taking in fairly chubby women (myself being one of them, I’m glad). And a male at five foot and eight inches did not incur an extra charge until 202 pounds, and would not be automatically declined until he weighed over 266 pounds! So that certainly allows some applicants in with a bit of a belly.
But still, some weight lifters may weight a lot more than average people, and they are not fat at all! Besides, one recent medical study showed that people who were slightly chubby in middle aged could expect to live longer than those who were either very slim or very fat.
But there are just general guidelines form one insurer, and I’m sure that any other health factors can make these guidelines tighter. For instance, a smoker who is overweight may get a double rate-up, and will pay more premiums.

I know what you are thinking. Those overweight people should just lose some weight. They would be healthier, look better on the beach, and pay less for health insurance (and probably food too!). But is that fair? One could argue, as Stephen Colbert did, that people who ride motorcycles should also pay higher medical plan premiums. One could extend that to people who parachute, date a lot, or are thoughtless jerks. But where are the charts for that?
Were You Declined For Your Weight?
If you were declined for overweight or underweight issues, you need to find an agent who will look at rate charts and call ahead. It is, however, understandable that an agent would have been caught off guard for the fat baby and the skiny toddler. Those guidelines don’t seem to be as well documented. You may also be able to protest a decision that you do not think is fair, and sometimes insurers will change their minds. Be prepared to document your health and to make a good case.
